FIBREACOUSTICS s.r.l. is a startup founded on 2016 based on a new patented technology designed to exploit the acoustic properties of materials in a new way. The innovative approach proposes a sustainable, more performing, fully engineerable, lighter, cheaper and fully customisable solutions for the production of acoustically efficient composite materials and hybrid natural fibers. We apply these innovative composites in the construction of musical instruments, speakers and hi fi systems, headphones, environmental acoustics panels and speaker cones.
STORY The project started on 2016 in London at the Imperial College during a research project about implementing natural materials in replacement of wood and artificial materials (plastics and carbon fibre) in acoustics. The goal was to create natural materials able to resonate better than what was already existing giving the chance to be modified and customised to achieve different timbres and sounds.
After more than 50 documented experiments, the most promising material selected were the composite materials implementing textiles impregnated in resins or bio-resins. Silk and spider silk (material tested trough the collaboration with Oxford University) gave the best results in term of especially giving a high richness of harmonics transmitted. This is given by the specific mechanical properties of these silk and spider silk (especially the spider silk used being 5 times stronger than steel) in the composite: an interesting combination between lightness, rigidity and a low internal viscosity. This last property in particular permise to the vibrations to flow along the strands of materials inside the composite that are made of very smooth fibres. This avoids the dissipation of the vibration in heat maintaining the harmonics as much a possible unaltered.
The silk fabrics used in the composites are textiles specifically designed to maintain the stiffness in specific directions in combination with low weight, while spider silk strands are used as reinforcements obtaining rigidity with almost no weight added.
This project became a patent filed by Luca Alessandrini that nowadays collaborate with a network of artisans, luthiers and musicians creating musical instruments such as violins, cellos, percussions and guitars.
